Research Methods

Professor Alisa Smiley-Rudolph, Spring 2023

To gain more experience and understanding of research methods, we developed proposals for potential research studies as one of our penultimate assignments.  I wrote a proposal for an experimental study study hypothesizing that teaching undergraduate students emotional intelligence as part of freshman curriculums would increase GPA and retention.

Psychology and Social Change

Professor Ryan Aldrich, Summer 2024

I found that exploring the five core social motives—belonging, understanding, controlling, enhancing self, and trusting—helped me better understand my social change identity. Writing about belonging made me think about how community support empowers me. Understanding highlighted the importance of open dialogue in my social circles. Discussing controlling made me see the positive influence I can have in my work. Enhancing self reminded me of my personal growth journey, especially through my psychology studies. Trusting underscored the value of building respectful relationships.

Psychology and Social Change

Professor Ryan Aldrich, Summer 2024

I found it enlightening to explore how my personality traits, lived experiences, social influences, psychological vulnerability, and personal growth shape my advocacy efforts. Analyzing my personality through the Big Five Model helped me understand how my high agreeableness and openness to experience drive my empathy and curiosity. Examining the impact of social influences, including education and media, showed me how they continue to shape my views and broaden my cultural understanding. Writing about psychological vulnerability underscored the importance of authenticity and trust in fostering meaningful connections. Lastly, reflecting on personal growth emphasized the role of resilience, a growth mindset, and emotional intelligence in navigating and promoting social change.
